Heart Break Hill Trent & Mersey

We left Middlewich at 9.30 Saturday this chap was looking for his breakfast.

We headed on to the Trent & Mersey Canal as we are heading to the Macclesfield Canal then on to the Peak Forest Canal as we are going to met up with Keith and Isobel next weekend who live on their narrow-boat Harlequin Pearl, which is moored at New Mills Marina.
We got to know them when we all had shares in Dragonfly which was a narrow boat we had shares in for 7 years, we sold our shares last year.

So with the knowledge that we had a few !!! locks to do we cruised at a steady pace passed Sandbach and on to Wheelock and the start of Heart Break Hill called this as it has 25 locks in total before we turn on to the Macclesfield Canal.
I know I do go on about how wonderful the scenery is but it is, the photos just don't do it many justice.

We moored at Hassell Green just after lock 57, it is a shame that the lovely little cafe that was there has closed down. The moon was looking lovely tonight.

Some  really nice brick work on the double single locks! well what I mean is 2 locks together but as single locks and not double.

Some of the double single locks are not in use any more.

Eddy here the scenery just passes me by as I am usually asleep on the Futon or on my blanket in the front of the boat. I do look out at times but not often as I need my rest.
Well I did not get as much rest today as the noise in the locks kept me awake. and bless them both they have done 16 locks today so they need their rest as well they only have another 16 locks to do tomorrow or maybe 17.

We woke to strong winds and heavy rain on Sunday so decided to stay put for the day at Hassell Green.

Monday morning was a lot better weather wise no wind and clear skies so we set off at 9.30 to complete the remaining 16 locks and get on to the Macclesfield Canal.

At one of the locks we met Paul and his daughter Hannah who were out for a walk with there dog. Sharon offered Hannah a lift on Tacet up through a lock which Hannah eagerly excepted. Hannah seemed to enjoy her trip and thanked Sharon for the lift.

We made good progress through the locks and were soon at Kidsgrove where we used the Red Bull Services before Sharon completed a fantastic manoeuvre under the main road in to the lock, very tight indeed but Sharon did not even touch the wall she certainly knows how to handle Tacet.

We done the last lock before making the really tight right turn heading towards the Macclesfield Canal and were joined by the stuff that lets us float on the canal (rain). We made our way towards bridge 87 Sherborne Marina and decided to call it a day as the rain was getting heavy and the predicted wind was getting stronger.

Time Travelled Saturday 6.5 Hrs  Distance 8 Miles 16 Locks
Time Travelled Monday 6 Hrs Distance 7 Miles 17 Locks

Total Distance Travelled is 263. Miles
66 Locks (Broad) 149 single locks and 12 tunnel's, Total Tunnel length 7294  yards
Total Time 152 hours
WE ARE LOVING IT

  3. Hi Eddy, Pleased to hear you are keeping well. So its a good job the dancing fairy is on the helm and not the moustached one, that way you get to keep the paint on the boat and not left on the walls !! Just back from Rome where we spent a week, lovely city ( no canals though) and a lot of old ruins, so the moustache one would fit in well. We are still enjoying your exploits and the photographs. Hows the stocks of Gin holding out, still some in the store. Keep the crew on their toes Eddy, and keep up the good work on the log and pics., your fans appreciate it.
    best regards
    Carol and Phil

  5. Hello Eddy and your two lovely carers.... X x x. So good to read all about your travels this week even though you do not stray far from your futon I can see you have been to some gorgeous places. My carers have returned from holidays and collected me from my holiday home where I spent a quiet week with about 10 other cats! They had a very relaxing time but did not bring me a pressie!

Tacet sounds as if it has become a comfortable home for all of you and I love the photos , they give a glimpse of the freedom and space that you are travelling through and how calm and relaxing the journey is.

Malc and Linda say hello and look forward to catching up soon and will email you.. News is they are to be grandparents again come September .... Michelle and Ben are pregnant. Goodness they'll be two of them chasing me now ... Might come and visit you Eddy , is there room on your futon !
    Love to all x
